The ministers of foreign affairs and the ministers of defence discussed the challenges of hybrid threats, emphasising the need to further develop and expand cooperation with NATO to successfully counter them.
The first EU diplomats also discussed the tensions in the Gulf, agreeing that EU should continue its efforts to save the Iranian Nuclear Deal.
The EU foreign ministers held discussions with the Western Balkan countries with a major focus on regional cooperation. The key role of the Berlin Process in improving connectivity in the region was highlighted. The ministers expressed expectations that the forthcoming joint presidency of Bulgaria and Northern Macedonia of the Berlin Process would give a new impetus to regional cooperation.
"The EU must show that it is a reliable partner and decide to open accession negotiations with the Republic of Northern Macedonia and Albania," Minister Zaharieva urged her colleagues. In her opinion, special attention should be paid to measures to prevent young people from leaving the region. In 2018 alone, 2.2% of the population of Albania and 2.1% of the population of Northern Macedonia left their countries, according to Eurostat.
