Plovdiv. People's protests near the Shishmantsi landfill continue. Today, more than 100 residents of Rakovski and the villages of Shishmantsi, Belozem and Stryama have gathered to protest against the frequent fires at the Shishmantsi landfill, Focus Radio – Plovdiv reported. The protests are led by Father Rumen, a priest from the town of Rakovski. People are demanding strict control over the waste treatment plant. They are calling for a referendum on the plant closure or its turning into an ecological plant.
"The state has the resources to do this, and it can even be profitable," said Father Rumen. In his words, the plant is just a landfill, which has for years affected the residents of the nearby villages and towns with its frequent fires.
Residents of Rakovski have sent Prime Minister Boyko Borissov a letter signed by over 2000 people calling for assistance from the state in introducing urgent measures to ensure safety in the area or shut down the plant.

Plovdiv: Day four of firefighting efforts at Shishmantsi landfill

15 August 2019 | 12:58 | FOCUS News Agency
Plovdiv. The firefighting efforts at the landfill near Shishmantsi continue for the fourth day in a row, Focus Radio – Plovdiv reported. The fire is smouldering, firefighters are dumping water and earth. The smouldering is up to 10 metres deep, which means that it will last at least for another week, the firefighters said.
This morning once again several residents of the neighbouring villages gathered near the landfill to express their concern over the air pollution from the smoke. The regional environment inspectorate reported yesterday that the level of fine particulate matter in the air was only slightly elevated and did not pose risk to people’s health.

Plovdiv: Over 300 protesters gather at waste plant in Shishmantsi, where fire has been burning for three days

Plovdiv. More than 300 people from the villages of Stryama, Shishmantsi and Belozem gathered at 06:00 this morning at the entrance of the Shishmantsi municipal waste plant, where a fire has been burning for three days, Focus Radio – Plovdiv reported. The protesters were led by Father Rumen, a priest from the town of Rakovski. Representatives of the plant management and the regional environment inspectorate did not appear, Father Rumen told Focus Radio. He said today, too, the smoke was everywhere. In his words, the fire at the landfill will be smoldering for at least another week.
"We demand that this plant be shut down as it is not an eco-plant but a landfill that only accumulates waste and then gets on fire," he said. He further said that the plant pollutes the entire Thracian Plain, as well as the groundwater, fruits and vegetables. "We urge the state to make this plant work and make profit," the priest said.
The protests will continue every day until the problem is solved and the protesters are ready to resort to more drastic measures such as closing roads and stopping the garbage trucks, he said.
