Special Criminal Court removes Kostenets Mayor Radostin Radev from office

Sofia. Today, the Special Criminal Court has removed Kostenets Mayor Radostin Radev from office, said the Appellate Special Prosecutor's Office.
The court held that if he stays in office, he could influence the investigation of acts committed by him in his capacity as public official.
The prosecutors demanded Radev's dismissal after a second indictment was brought against him on 30 August 2019 over embezzlement of BGN 22,137. According to the allegations, Radev requested and received the amount in question twice in December 2018 from a municipal logging enterprise, misappropriating the amount. Under these proceedings, he is also investigated for mismanagement. He has been released on a BGN 50,000 bail.
Nearly two months before that, on 18 June 2019, the Special Prosecutor's Office charged Radev with active bribery – in his capacity as public official he promised BGN 30,000 to a municipal councilor if he voted in a certain way at a session of the Municipal Council. He was initially remanded in custody but later released and placed under house arrest. On 29 August 2019, the Special Criminal Court of Appeal set a BGN 70,000 non-appealable bail.

Deputy Prosecutor-General Ivan Geshev: Mayor of Kostenets had promised municipal councilors BGN 30,000 for voting in favour of decisions in his own interests

Sofia. Mayor of Kostenets has promised municipal councilors BGN 30,000 for voting in favour of decisions in his own interests, Deputy Prosecutor-General Ivan Geshev said during a press briefing on an investigation into the mayor of Kostenets, Focus News Agency reported.
"This is yet another case of good cooperation between law enforcement authorities. Bulgarian citizens need to know that national security services and the justice system in the person of the prosecutor's office do well most of their work," Geshev said. In his words, this is the only way to respond to the claims that the fight against corruption yields no results.
In his words, the pre-trial proceedings against the Kostenets mayor have been under the supervision of the Special Prosecutor's Office since March. The procedure was instituted based on information provided by the anticorruption body, Geshev said, adding that special intelligence means were used.
Prosecutor Geshev explained that the mayor had promised the amount of BGN 30,000 to municipal councilors who supported certain decisions that were in his own interests. "Until two days ago, this was the main subject of the investigation," he said, adding that as a result of the investigative actions over the last few days the subject would be expanded to include embezzlement and mismanagement.
