New chief prosecutor to be elected 24 October13 June 2019 | 16:00 | FOCUS News Agency
Within two weeks the SJC will hold four sessions on which nominations will be made.
At least three members of the Prosecutor College and the justice minister have the right to nominate a candidate. Minister Danail Kirilov has already announced that he would not do so as not to politicise the election. The candidates to head the state prosecution will be announced on 30 July. Sotir Tsatsarov's mandate expires on 10 January.
The nominee who receives the support of at least 17 members of the SJC will win. The nomination then needs to be approved by President Rumen Radev, who has already made it clear that he does not take his role in the procedure as mere formality.
Moving the date forward, according to Justice Minister Danail Kirilov, will give more time for continuity between Sotir Tsatsarov and his successor, but also time to react in relation to the president’s final decree.
