Police officers from Haskovo and Harmanli have detained two men transporting 18 foreigners in their cars, said the Ministry of the Interior
press office. On 18 April in the morning, on Maritsa Motorway in the direction of Svilengrad - Plovdiv, police officers stopped an Audi driven by a 38-year-old resident of the village of Nova Nadezhda, Haskovo. Seven foreigners without identity papers were found in the car. The police officers also signalled an Opel to stop but the car continued to move. After a short chase, the 39-year-old driver pulled over, it turned out that he had 11 men in his car, one again without papers. The foreign citizens aged between 16 and 25, who self-identified as Afghan nationals, were taken to the Harmanli police station and then transported to the Harmanli Registration and Reception Centre. The drivers of the vehicles, who are known to the law enforcers, have been detained for up to 24 hours. Pre-trial proceedings have been instituted.
