Appellate Criminal Court upholds detention of five members of phone fraud group

30 April 2019 | 15:21 | FOCUS News Agency
Sofia. The Appellate Criminal Court has upheld the ruling of the first instance court of 21 April 2019, imposing remand in custody on five of the members of an organised crime group for telephone fraud, who were arrested in Gorna Oryahovitsa and Sofia, said the Appellate Prosecutor's Office.
The court dismissed the defendants' claims for lighter measures, holding that there was sufficient evidence that the accused were the persons who committed the crime, and that there was a real risk of them committing another crime. The court panel adopted the thesis of the Appellate Prosecutor's Office of a danger that the accused might abscond. The court pointed out that one of the other six group members who were detained in Romania had been banned from leaving the country under other legal proceedings but nonetheless was detected in Romania.
The Romanian authorities are yet to complete the extradition procedure for the six Bulgarian citizens detained with a European arrest warrant and set a date for their handover to the Bulgarian judicial authorities.
The decision of the Appellate Criminal Court is not subject to appeal.

People are urged to disconnect the call immediately and call 112 or the nearest police station, if they have received a phone call with a similar request.
