With 140 votes in favour, the Bulgarian Parliament ratified the Protocol to the North Atlantic Treaty on the Accession of North Macedonia, Focus News Agency
reports. The protocol was signed on February 6 in Brussels. Macedonia was invited to join the alliance following the settlement of the dispute with Greece over the country’s name and the signing of the Prespes agreement on June 17, 2018. The Parliament in Skopje completed the amendment to the country’s constitution on January 11, while on January 25 the bilateral agreement was ratified by the Greek Parliament. On January 15, 1992, Bulgaria first officially recognised independent Macedonia, while on August 1, 2017 the two countries signed the friendship treaty. The Protocol to the North Atlantic Treaty will come into effect after each member notifies the US, as depositary, of the implementation of internal procedures. The Republic of North Macedonia will be the 30th member of NATO.
