Blagoevgrad. Smog in major cities is very saturated with particulate matter emitted by vehicles and solid fuel heating, Dr. Petar Georgiev told
Focus Radio - Pirin. Particulate matter has a very negative effect on the whole respiratory system, especially the lung. It damages lung tissue and enters the blood, the specialist explained. Smog exacerbates bronchitis in chronically ill people and problems in asthmatics, but it also affects all those who generally have no breathing problems. “The bronchi narrow and contract, which produces a shortness of breath. Children, who have more delicate lungs, also suffer a lot,” Dr. Georgiev added. The effects may vary in severity, depending on one’s general condition.
