The state must support financially the nutrition of children at school – the shared responsibility between the community and institutions has proven to be ineffective, nutritionist Prof. Donka Baykova told Focus Radio
, commenting on the increasing percentage of overweight Bulgarian children putting Bulgarian among the most affected countries in the EU. The change in the diet and lifestyle of today’s children poses a risk to public health and the future reproduction of the nation in the long run, the nutritionist explained. Fast-food chains are everywhere, and children, especially at school age, prefer to eat there. The Free Breakfast programme was a shared responsibility but it did not work, it failed to offer healthy food at school. Cafeterias are also only available in few schools, Prof. Baykova commented. She pointed out that sufficient physical activity is another factor that is neglected. According to recent studies, only about 30% of the boys and less than 20% of the girls are active at least an hour per day. School meals should be affordable and responsive to the needs of children, the nutritionist said.
