From its launch in 1985 until the accident in 2017 the Echemishka tunnel was not repaired at all despite many reports and findings about its poor state. This is what Prosecutor General Spokesperson Rumyana Arnaudova said at a briefing after several Road Infrastructure Agency officials were charged over the accident that killed a woman in 2017, Focus News Agency
reports. For those years, the tunnel was once cleaned and painted, the lighting was fixed with wire and cables, beams fell on the road, threatening traffic, she said. Charges have been brought against three board members of the road agency, two of whom were executive directors.
