Kathimerini: Kammenos insists name deal is 'last straw' for ANEL; Kotzias slams critics21 October 2018 | 14:43 | FOCUS News Agency
The name deal, which was approved in the first of three votes in Skopje on Friday, is the “last straw” for ANEL, said Kammenos, adding that his party will leave the coalition if leftist SYRIZA presents the agreement for ratification.
“We cooperated to save the country,” Kammenos said of the alliance, which has come under increasing strain in recent days after the ANEL chief, who is also defense minister, went off script during a visit to Washington earlier this month, presenting his own alternative to the deal renaming the Balkan country “North Macedonia.”
“ANEL has been clear on its position; we will not accept the term 'Macedonia,'” Kammenos said. “We have never cooperated with those who want to steal our history.”
In a related development, meanwhile, Nikos Kotzias, the key negotiator of the name deal who resigned from the post of foreign minister last week following acrimony with Kammenos, has lashed out against critics of his decision to step down.
In an angry post of Twitter on Sunday, Kotzias accused his critics, without naming them, of using “mud, lies and slander to undermine my honor, reputation and integrity.”
“Resignation is an act of responsibility,” he added.
Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras took over the Foreign Ministry portfolio on Saturday and has vowed to stay in the post for “as long as it takes” to see the name deal to a successful conclusion.
