Ruse. The Regional Court has ruled that Severin Krasimirov, charged with the rape and murder of journalist Viktoria Marinova, will remain in custody, given the evidence against him and the risk of the accused hiding or committing another crime, the court’s press office said.
Ruse Regional Prosecutor Georgi Georgiev said that Severin has admitted hitting Viktoria, but has said nothing about the rape. There is no evidence that he had an accomplice. He did not know the victim and had not seen her on TV, the accused has said. He claims there was a row between them.

Expert: There are risks of slow or hasty prosecution for the murder in Ruse

15 October 2018 | 10:38 | FOCUS News Agency
Sofia. There are risks of delayed or hasty prosecution for the murder in Ruse, lawyer Anton Stankov, former justice minister and former judge, told Focus Radio this morning. He stressed that what’s known to the police should not be disclosed to the media. He declined to comment on hypotheses about the murder without conclusive facts and evidence.
“I do not like the fact that this criminal case has been politically used. There are still many unsolved murders in Bulgaria, which increases mistrust about the work of the Ministry of Interior and investigating authorities. In this particular case, in my opinion, the authorities have done well. Problems in the judiciary, however, span from qualification to career development and evaluation of judges. There were no problems when we were a totalitarian state. Now the problems should be put as political priorities and resolved. Longer-term strategies are needed on the political front, specifically in the field of justice, as well as continuity in reforms,” Anton Stankov said. According to him, bringing back death penalty would be absurd, mainly because of Bulgaria’s international commitments.

10 October 2018 | 10:29 | FOCUS News Agency
Sofia. Severin Krasimirov, 21, charged with the rape and murder of journalist Viktoria Marinova, was detained last night by the German police after a request from the Bulgarian authorities, Minister of Interior Mladen Marinov and Prosecutor General Sotir Tsatsarov said at a briefing. Although no hypothesis is discarded, at this point the authorities have no reason to believe that the murder is related to Marinova’s work, the chief prosecutor said. So far the evidence suggests a spontaneous sexual assault. The police found DNA from the victim on the man’s clothes and his DNA on the victim. The assault and murder were extremely brutal, Prosecutor General Tsatsarov said. There is evidence that in the hours before the assault the man consumed a large amount of alcohol. There have been no eyewitnesses to the murder. Severin Krasimirov was born in Ruse and has a criminal record for stealing non-ferrous metals.
