The Parliament has adopted on first reading amendments to the Religious Denominations Act tabled by the United Patriots Group, Focus News Agency
reports. The bill was supported by 106 MPs, one voted against, and 25 abstained. According to the United Patriots ‘religious radicalism’ needs a legal definition. The proposed amendments are intended to regulate funding stipulating that denominations should be funded only by sources of income in Bulgaria. There are also changes in the registration regime, training in secondary and higher theological schools and administrative sanctions. Additional funding for religious education at school is proposed, as well as the possibility for educational activities conducted by religious organisations under programmes approved by the Ministry of Education and Science. The United Patriots call for a broad public debate between the first and second reading of the bill. They also propose forming a working group with representatives of the different political forces and religions.
