The man was detained on 11 September 2018 in an operation by the Border Police, the State Agency for National Security, and the Special Prosecutor’s Office, when he was trying to cross the border with Turkey at the Kapitan Andreevo checkpoint. In his Swiss-registered SUV, police found three rifles, a pistol, about 400 cartridges and 24 knives. There was also a map with a route leading to Idlib in Syria.
The man and his car had been wanted by the Swiss authorities. They had been alerted by the suspect’s father that he had disappeared, and that weapons and ammunition were missing.
