Trump: 'I think I did great at the news conference'19 July 2018 | 03:14 | FOCUS News Agency
"I think I did great at the news conference," Trump said on CBS Evening News. "I think it was a strong news conference."
Trump drew bipartisan ire for his remarks at the press conference, during which he sided with Putin on the world stage by implying he trusted the Russian leader's denial of Kremlin interference in the
Though Trump has since partially walked back his remarks, lawmakers have continued to publicly assail his conduct, calling it "shameful" and even "treacherous."
Some of the most prominent critics of Trump's performance have been members of his own party who do not typically split with the president on foreign policy matters, such as Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.). Graham's criticism prompted Trump's defense in the CBS interview.
Trump, however, blamed the post-Helsinki pushback on the media.
"I will tell you, I don’t know what all the fuss is about," Trump said. "I think the press largely makes up a lot of the fuss about a lot of the things. It’s crazy."
"You do something that’s positive and they try to make it as negative as possible," he added. He foreshadowed this criticism before the Helsinki summit, when he predicted "no matter how well I do at the summit ... I would return to criticism that it wasn't good enough."
Trump has continually blamed the fury following the meeting on the media, tweeting on Tuesday that "fake news is going Crazy!"
"While I had a great meeting with NATO, raising vast amounts of money, I had an even better meeting with Vladimir Putin of Russia," he tweeted. "Sadly, it is not being reported that way."
Trump during the CBS interview also appeared to hold Putin accountable for Russian meddling in the 2016 election. He said Putin was responsible for the Kremlin's attempts to sow discord "because he’s in charge of the country."
"Just like I consider myself to be responsible for things that happen in this country," Trump said.
