Burgas. Minister of Interior Valentin Radev has ordered an examination to find out if there were flaws in the search for prison escapee Vladimir Pelov, he told reporters in Burgas, quoted by Focus Radio. He said the police had been closing in on Pelov before he was shot dead on Tuesday night, in a gunfight with another man with criminal record. “All I have heard from the management is quite different from what I saw on TV. There were hints all the time. We’d been close on him and close to capturing him before that [his] murder. As a colleague has said, it was a mischance that it was not us. I think it’s good that the killer [Pelov] did not cause greater trouble. You saw what we found in the place where that man lived. There were explosives, hand grenades,” Radev said.
Interior Ministry Secretary General Mladen Marinov said he supports the team that has been working on the case.

Sofia. The gunfight in Botevgrad shows the failure of the Ministry of Interior because an incident of this type carries a great risk for the citizens, security expert Tihomir Bezlov from the Center for the Study of Democracy told Focus Radio. In reference to the same incident in the centre of Botevgrad on June 5, he said there were some contradictions. He added that the interior ministry had really allocated great resources to find the two escapees from the Sofia prison, Vladimir Pelov and Radoslav Kolev, and had made efforts to catch Pelov in the area of Botevgrad. According to the expert, the ministry is not what it used to be and needs reassessment and a solution to the shortage of police officers and qualified staff.

Sofia. The police said that a financial dispute between the two men and Mario Panchev’s threat to testify against Vladimir Pelov were likely the motives for the gunfight between them in Botevgrad last night, Focus News Agency reports. Vladimir Pelov, who this year escaped from the Sofia prison, was shot dead, while Mario Panchev is in hospital in a serious condition. Their personal conflict lately is also a possible motive, Interior Ministry Secretary General Mladen Marinov said at a briefing. Pelov was the one who attacked the other man last night. The injured has a criminal record and was previously involved in criminal activity together with Pelov.
Before the incident, the police received numerous tips that Pelov was in Botevgrad, all of which were checked, they said.
