Sofia. President Rumen Radev’s visit and Prime Minister Boyko Borissov’s upcoming visit to Russia will build a lasting framework for bilateral relations, showing their stability and prospect, political scientist Tatyana Burudzhieva told Focus Radio this morning. She pointed out that the sign of unfreezing the strained relations came from the presidential institution.
“We were in tense relations with Russia, firstly because as an EU member we are part of Europe’s policy towards Russia; secondly, Bulgaria as a country on the Black Sea and as a European border has its interests; on the other hand, we have the historical foundations of these relations. It was very important to take this first step after a 10-year break. On the other hand, South Stream was a very advanced project in Bulgaria and the fact that we could not be part of it has to be compensated. I strongly hope that it could be recovered just as it seemed impossible for the Belene NPP project to be restarted,” Tatyana Burudzhieva said, and explained that initial comments in Russian media showed the extent to which Russia had been affected by the absence of good bilateral relations. She added that the resumption of the Bulgarian-Russian relations was an expected step, taken more cautiously after the relations had been destroyed.

President Rumen Radev: Political dialogue between Bulgaria and Russia is important for successful cooperation in all areas of mutual interest

Sochi. The political dialogue between Bulgaria and Russia is important for the successful cooperation in all areas of mutual interest, President Rumen Radev said during his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Focus News Agency reported. President Radev said that the purpose of the visit was to restore the political dialogue at the highest level after a years-long break. “It is a pleasure that my visit is taking place on the eve of the celebration of the Bulgarian education and culture and of the Slavonic script – May 24. Even more so that today our peoples celebrate this holiday together,” he noted. “Together we also celebrate an important anniversary – 140 years from the liberation of Bulgaria and the Russian-Turkish liberation war, thanks to which Bulgaria reemerged on the European map. That is why our relations are more special. They are not based on purely political and economic interests but on the deep historical, spiritual, cultural and linguistic relationship between our peoples. This gives us a number of advantages and makes our relations more natural and easier. At the same time, it obliges us to be open, to put forward all topics on which we have unresolved issues,” he added. “Today I expect us to really make a strategic review of our bilateral relations, pointing out the strong traditions and huge potential we have while also justifying the need for real action. We have many mutual interests in trade, economy, energy, education and culture. I will be glad to have a frank and profound dialogue today that will provide a basis and positive impetus to our governments to work in this direction,” the Bulgarian president said.
