Parliament approves navy modernisation project

Sofia. The Parliament overwhelmingly approved the updated project for the acquisition of patrol vessels for the navy, estimated at up to BGN 984 million, Focus News Agency reports. The state wants to acquire two multi-purpose modular patrol vessels capable of taking part in a wide range of NATO and EU operations. The first vessel should be delivered in the first five years, and the second one – by the end of the sixth year. The payment will be done in a 9-year period.

Parliament approves modernisation projects for ground troops and air force

Sofia. The Parliament approved the modernisation projects worth over BGN 3 billion for the ground troops and the air force, Focus News Agency reports.
For the ground troops, the state plans to acquire 150 armoured units and additional equipment within 8 years after the signing of the supply contract. It is a BGN-1.4-billion project for a 12-year term, with deferred payment.
The package for the air force includes the acquisition of 16 fighters in two phases of 8 each. The first phase is estimated at BGN 1.8 billion. The defence ministry is considering F16, Eurofighter, Dassault Rafale or Gripen.
The second project is to provide operating capacity for air policing at the end of the third year after the supply contract comes into effect, and full capacity at the end of the fifth year.
