Hayredin mayor: Two dams overflowing after heavy rain last night, no danger to people so far

Hayredin. Two small dams are overflowing after heavy rains last night, Hayredin Mayor Todor Aleksiev told FOCUS Radio this morning as the declared emergency in the municipality continues for another day. He said there is no danger to people at present, but the teams remain on standby. At the Rogozen dam, located downstream from the other two reservoirs, the situation has improved. After the measures taken, the water level decreased by over 1 m in 24 hours and no longer overflows through the spillway, the mayor said. The emergency will not be lifted as long as there is even the slightest danger to people, he added.

Sofia. The Barzina dam wall is compromised but its situation is not an emergency and the spillway is functioning well, Regional Development Minister Nikolay Nankov said after an inspection, FOCUS News Agency reports. There is no danger for the dam to break, Nankov said. It will be repaired when the water level decreases in the summer months. The Rogozen 1 dam has a problem with its spillway that will also be solved in the next months, through planned repairs. The state should secure funds for the repair of the two dams, according to the minister. He added that the authorities were preparing changes to the rules for dams and that the problematic dams were precisely the small ones.

President Rumen Radev: Bulgaria needs national centre to monitor and respond to natural disasters

Sofia. Bulgaria needs a national centre for monitoring, response and management in cases of natural disasters and crises. The centre would identify potential risks for people in real time, taking timely measures for protection, state officials agreed at a meeting with President Rumen Radev, his press office said. The meeting was called on the occasion of the emergency in the Hayredin municipality. It was attended by Chief of Defence Andrey Botsev, Fire Safety and Civil Protection General Directorate Chief Nikolay Nikolov, State Agency for Metrological and Technical Surveillance (SAMTS) Head Petar Gornovski, and SAMTS Dam Supervision Director Kiril Voynov.
Nikolay Nikolov assured the president that there is no imminent danger for people in Hayredin and that the authorities are ready to respond if necessary.
The officials agreed that the country needs a national system to monitor its dams, similarly to the measures taken in the Burgas region.

Sofia. Snow melting is under control – the army is ready to act not only with equipment but also with helicopters, if there are people in need, said Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence Krasimir Karakachanov, FOCUS News Agency reports.
Minister Karakachanov said that it is a “normal situation” in this season and yesterday’s rise in some river levels was a result of snow melting. “Today the situation is normal. We do not expect surprises unless the weather conditions deteriorate and heavy rain starts,” Karakachanov said. In his words, things are under control. “The army always gets involved in respect to dams. Last year we bought 20 boats with outboard engines,” the мinister of defence explained.

Hayredin. The situation is calm, there has been no need for further evacuation, Hayredin Mayor Todor Aleksiev told FOCUS Radio after the declared emergency and the evacuation yesterday. The Rogozen dam level has not changed since yesterday. About 4-5 cu m of water flows into the dam, the same volumes as those flowing out of it, the mayor said. There is no risk for people at present, he stressed, adding that otherwise they would be immediately alerted. The situation at Barzina dam is also calm. The state of emergency in the municipality will be lifted after the dams stop overflowing.
