The chancellor conceded a series of public spending promises and a pledge to push for more EU integration to persuade Martin Schulz, leader of the Social Democratic Party (SPD), to renew the “grand coalition” with her conservatives. Mr Schulz, however, has a big challenge to sell the 28-page coalition document to his own party before a vote by 600 SPD delegates at a special conference on January 21.
