Hurriyet: HDP co-chair Demirtaş’s first hearing starts in his absence7 December 2017 | 14:18 | FOCUS News Agency
The Ankara 19th Court held the first hearing in the case 399 days after Demirtaş, the co-chair of the Kurdish issue-focused HDP, was first arrested.
Demirtaş was absent from the case as he refused to link to the court room via an audiovisual system. The court judges also refused to allow international and local observers to attend the hearing.
The HDP co-chair is accused of a “leading a terrorist organization,” “inciting hate and crime in public” and “campaigning for a terrorist organization.”
Lawyers say there are a total of 31 different summaries of proceedings included in the case, including a number of speeches Demirtaş delivered on separate occasions.
In the preliminary assessment at the hearing, before Demirtaş’s lawyers started making his defense, the prosecutor demanded a continuation of his imprisonment during the trial process.
