Ognian Zlatev, EC Representation in Bulgaria: With EUR 194 mln in grants, the EC reconfirms its support for the EU membership of the Western Balkan countries14 November 2017 | 13:15 | FOCUS News Agency
The European Commission is developing a strategy for a successful EU accession of Serbia and Montenegro as frontrunner candidates in the region, with a special emphasis on the rule of law, fundamental rights and the fight against corruption and on the overall stability of the region. “The Commission supports reform efforts in the Western Balkans countries and has earmarked financial resources to pursue its policy of promoting their EU membership. In May, the leaders of the Western Balkan countries agreed with the Commission’s proposal to set up a regional economic area that will attract potential investors to the region offering them access to almost 20 million consumers from a single consolidated base,” Zlatev commented.
“Bulgaria has achieved macroeconomic stability, which gives reasonable grounds to the Bulgarian government to seek access to the ERM-2 currency grid before applying to join the euro area. Bulgaria has relatively low external debt, low inflation and unemployment rate, which indicates a trend to economic stability."
"The EC continues to work in the framework of its 10 priority areas which include strengthening the EU’s social dimension, digital market, the banking union, and all objectives set are realistic and feasible,” he said.
