Yordanka Fandakova, Mayor of Sofia: There has been a steady tendency for reducing air pollution since 201112 October 2017 | 12:43 | FOCUS News Agency
“The quality of air is a priority for Sofia Municipality. Therefore, we consider dealing with air problems and communicating with citizens and institutions very important. In recent years this has been set as a priority on our agenda and measures have been taken to reduce harmful emissions,” Fandakova said.
Such a measure aimed at improving air quality are the new buses and the metro. 75,000 tonnes of harmful emissions are saved annually after the construction of the second subway line. And the third line is expected to save annually another 50,000 tonnes of harmful emissions.
90% of the bus park is replaced, new recycled trams are being purchased. Last year the Sofia Municipality and the Sofia Municipal Council made a decision not to buy diesel buses anymore. A procedure is being prepared for the purchase of 20 electric buses, Fandakova said.
In her words, the great challenge is the reduction of fine particulates. In the summer they were minimal, but they are expected to increase in winter.
With regard to reducing indoor air pollution, the mayor says there are projects but some of the measures are unpopular as they affect citizens and their habits.
