According to the spokesperson of the Coast Guard, Ionela Pasat, the patrol vessel MAI 3057, belonging to the Mangalia Fleet, has received an alert message on Sunday morning, around 7 am, via the Surveillance and Control of Traffic on the Black Sea — SCOMAR, to intercept a suspicious vessel sailing in the Black Sea, approximately 10 nautical miles away from Mangalia locality, heading for the shore.
"The suspicious vessel, displaying a Turkish pavilion, continued on its route, while it became clear that it had a large number of immigrants on-board, so that a Coast Guard vessel intercepted it and escorted it to the shore, to the headquarters f the Mangalia Fleet," the spokesperson explained.
The first checks conducted by the Romanian authorities showed that the ship Emek 1, displaying a Turkish pavilion, was led by two facilitators to clandestine immigrants, a Bulgarian citizens and a Cypriot, with the ship having 69 Iraqi citizens on board (30 men, 10 women and 29 minors), investigation in this case still ongoing.
