According to him, Turkey must strictly meet the EU’s requirements and be constantly monitored regarding the respect for human rights.
Instead of full membership, the relations will likely develop in two directions: improvement of the customs union and security cooperation. An improvement of the customs union will benefit both Ankara and the EU, but it must include a monitoring of democracy and respect to human rights.
