Prof Vladimir Chukov: Geopolitical and geostrategic interests will change significantly in the Middle East in the coming days19 May 2017 | 13:33 | FOCUS News Agency
According to him, the three upcoming meetings at a high level will shift the focus of the participants in the Syrian conflict. “A goal for the US will be to attempt to isolate Iran,” the professor said. “The problems and processes going on in Syria and in a more global Middle East plan show that the fight against terrorism is not the only reason for the firm position of the US to arm Syrian Kurds. Apart from this combat capacity, they occupy a strategic and geopolitical location, as they are practically located in the part of Syria through which the so-called ‘Iranian Silk Road’ passes. The emphasis should definitely be shifted from Turkey and placed on Saudi Arabia,” Prof Chukov commented.
He added that the results of today’s presidential elections in Iran is not without meaning for the West, because for them it would be preferable for the current, more open and dialogic leader to assume the post. Regarding NATO’s proposal for them to join the battle against the Islamic State, Chukov commented that west and eastern Europeans were not enthusiastic about such a commitment. “However, the proposal is a very serious request for a stronger engagement in NATO as a training unit for the Iraqi army, he added.
