Regarding the risk factors for people, he noted that almost every third person in Bulgaria smoked, and what was worrying was that smoking cigarettes started at an early age. Dr Kamenov explained that more than half of smokers started smoking between 16 and 20 years old. “Society in general underestimates the harm of smoking and is tolerating that kind of risky behaviour. We could note that the existing laws for the control of tobacco smoking are not sufficient enough,” he commented. Regarding alcohol, Dr Kamenov explained that every fourth person drank it in Bulgaria. “Most of the children aged between 10-19 have already tried alcohol. The average age for starting consumption is 13. Active measures are needed here to limit the use of alcohol, in order to improve the health of young people,” he commented. The Deputy Minister noted that 20% of those polled had risky weekly alcohol consumption.
“Over 70% of the population has insufficient physical activity. There is insufficient health education in regards to physical activities and the benefits of practicing it,” Dr Kamenov explained.
